Canine viral papillomas Viral papillomas, often referred to as oral papillomatosis, are benign, non-cancerous tumors caused by a virus. They generally appear as wart-like or “cauliflower-like” growths around the lips, tongue, and mouth. So I brought in this dog from overseas and noticed this on his lips. Did some research and it happens to be Canine viral papillomas. Viral papillomas are usually seen in dogs, usually younger than 2 years of age. It can happen to any breed or sex without no clinical signs. Symptons to look for though are Halotosis, excessive drooling and bleeding of the mouth and gums.
From my understanding, treatment is rarely needed as they resolve on their own. In certain cases the location of the papilloma can cause discomfort so removal from a specific treatment can be instituted.
Keeping your dogs area clean and feeding a premium dog food while waiting for the remission of the virus is usually all thats needed. Most dogs immune systems will be strong enough and not allow the virus to come back. Also, keep all other dogs away cause apparently the virus is contagious. STDT

Do dogs think of committing suicide?

I was just on twitter and @RMansfieldd posted this question, Do dogs think of commiting suicide? It made me wonder and had to write something about it….. I guess we have to think like a dog for that but begin by thinking of what humans think. For someone to attempt to take his own life he would first have to understand the meaning of death. A person like that will do so because they fear that living is worse than dying and will commit suicide to end all of their issues.

So considering that a dog might want to commit suicide, the question is what would push a dog to do so and if he understands the meaning of living and dying. The general idea is that dogs think like children (age 2 to 3 years) and for that not many would understand the idea of dying at that age.

You hear of stories of abandoned dogs and most are depressed and disconnect with their environment. I’ve seen dogs that seem to not care anymore and live day by day. As a matter of fact I owned a dog that knew the rules of staying clear of cars when coming down the driveway but one day at the age of 15 with many health issues, she simply walked in front of a car and got run over. Still, the idea of a depressed dog throwing himself in front of a car or jumping off a cliff is hard to accept.

So here’s my answer, a dogs instinct is to live. Fight or flight, but we have to understand that a depressed dog that has no more in him to live are willing to simply let go. I’ve seen many dogs being put to sleep for medical reasons and their eyes tell the story of “thank you” I’ll see you in the other side. Yet we are talking about a dog committing suicide instead of getting the syrup. In my opinion dogs can be severely depressed to the point that dogs they can commit suicide due to pain and not wanting to live anymore. An owner dies and a dog dies due to not wanting to live anymore. A dogs partner dies by getting hit by a car and the living dog can’t continue so he runs in front of a car as well and dies.

Here’s a story that occurred in Rome: the owner of Shastra, a Spanish cocker spaniel, died. When the corpse of its owner was pulled out of the house, the dog tossed itself from the third level and it just broke one leg. It was brought to the veterinarian but once again home, the dog pulled itself out from the leash and threw himself again. This time it died. Perhaps, the places in which the dog played so many times with its master could have recalled the dog such painful records that it could not resist and suicided.

Thanks for the read

The English Bulldog

The English Bulldog or commonly known as the Bulldog is really one of the friendliest, gentle and good natured dogs available for anyone to own. A medium sized dog, the Bulldog can and will be a couch-potato if allowed to be with weight being an issue. All this breed wants to do is hop on a couch and sleep all day. Other major issues are potential breathing iproblems, elbow and hips dysplasia, heart problems and skin issues.

The Bulldog is really a stubborn breed, I will say that about most every breed that I’ve worked with but the bulldog is different. They have more of the “lights are on but nobodies home” syndrome with their stubbornness. If he doesn’t want to do something, you’ll have a hard time getting him to do it. They are a fun dog to own for someone that doesn’t care about walking around too much. They can form a strong bond with children and is very good with them. In fact they will become part of the family and you can simply add them as one of yours too.

From what I’ve seen with Bulldogs, the majority are not destructive dogs but I’ve witness some of the most destructive chewers we’re bulldogs so give him plenty of chew toys and rawhide bones. Drooling and slobber is an issue but not as much as some may think but most of the time after eating and drinking. Anyone that owns this breed will tell you that they pass gas like crazy, so be prepared to deal with a dog that’s quite gassy. Snoring, snorts and grunts are frequent so get used to it if you plan to own one. Because of his flat face and short nose (Bracephalic Skull)  this causes him to have these issues but also to overheat in hot weather so keep him cool. As an owner of the breed I know that is important, the Air-conditioner is always on in my home.

Exercise is not overly necessary with this breed, but a walk everyday will be ideal. As a short hair breed you would think they would shed lightly but trust me they don’t! Because of their folds in their muzzle area, it is a must to keep them clean and washed regularly. Training is important as I’ll always say, coming from a dog trainers point of view. I will say this much the Bulldog is one of the hardest to train of all the breeds I’ve worked with, while he learns commands they can be slower than most breeds. Patience is a must with this breed.

Cool English Bulldog facts:

The Bulldog is the official logo of MACK TRUCKS

The University of Georgia and Georgetown have English bulldogs as mascots.

The first standard of the breed was established in 1864 and the first Bulldog Club was created 10 years later. Guess it’s fitting that the first entrant was named Adam!
